That's actually a really simplistic explanation. My dad pointed out about the sceptics near the end of the film, and that it was a warning. It represented how sometimes we don't realise things until it's too late.
Because in the eternal war of plants versus animals, plants have finally figured out mankind's weakness . . . his innate desire to commit suicide. That should go well for the tree population . . .
